A very welcome addition to my collection which has positive and negative points.
On the plus side - it's not a bad collection for Queen, though lacking some key tracks and featuring some lesser hits.
On the negative side - it does serve to reinforce 'the critics' view of the film - in that there does seem to be some resentment towards Freddie Mercury here; with Brian May seemingly (and impressions do count) forcing a 'May' track for every 'Mercury' track (much like McCartney re-released The Beatles Anthology with all songs penned by 'McCartney & Lennon; vice Lennon & McCartney). The unfortunate truth for Dr May is that Freddie simply had more 'greater' hits which is by no way a reflection of song-writing prowess or originality; as May has that in spades too. It just 'is.'
Sampling some of the tracks;
1.20th Century Fox Fanfare (Arr.May): I'm sure the film-goers will tear-up, get goose-bumps or just plain cheer; though in many ways this feels like a missed opportunity for Brian May. Whereas 'God Save The Queen' on 'A Night At The Opera' was beautific, orchestral & magnificent just as 'The Wedding March'on 'Flash Gordon' was majestic - 20th Century Fox Fanfare is thin; under played; under-produced and lacking in depth. To be honest - it sounds almost whimsical.. an after-thought..
3. Doing All Right (May/Staffell) performed by a reformed pre-Queen 'Smile' featuring Tim Staffell (Bass & Vocals), Brian May (Guitar & Vocals) and Roger Taylor (Drums & Vocals) is a very welcome refinement of a great track which appeared also on the first Queen Album (though woefully raw and under-produced with a 'thuddy' feel to it rather than a 'bang'). This finally does the original Smile composition great justice. A wonderful look back at the founding members of Queen and their earliest capabilities.
4. Keep Yourself Alive (Brian May); This live version from 'The Rainbow' may be chronologically accurate but first of all really didn't hit as a single despite being a cracker - clearly much to the chagrin of Brian May.
5. Killer Queen; This doesn't mention ..revisited - but absolutely should. A classic Freddie Mercury Pop Song which was perfect in every way when first recorded - Brian May has let his ego step-in by adding some woeful guitar chord accompianment to the verses. Why? Why would you 1. desecrate a perfect track and 2. demonstrate your input in such a banal manner? With 8 other tracks he had every right to play with - why would you do that to Freddie?
6. Fat Bottomed Girls (Live In Paris (Brian May)); Another somewhat forced feeling Brian May track - it was both a double-A-side hit for Queen and serves well to showcase their live vocal harmonies; but of course, in terms of originality for singles, pales in comparison to the better known and loved 'very-Queen' track 'Bicycle Race.'
7. Bohemian Rahpsody (Freddie Mercury): The third best selling UK Single of all-time and consistently voted best-song-ever in surveys and polls; and of course the name-sake of the movie - it had to be included; but why is it 'lost' in the middle of the album? Surely it should open or close it? Let's face it - the listing is not chronological by date.. It's almost as if the remaining members have purposely 'tried' to lose it in the running order..
8. Now I'm Here (Live at Hammersmith (Brian May)): Again a killer Brian May track - it is a decidedly un-Queen track that generally speaking live goes 'on-and-on-and-on-and-on'. But I guess Brian has to get his songs in against Freddie's. There's a good question here.. is it that Freddie, Roger & John wrote those distinctively progressive 'Queen' songs while Brian (despite being the unequivocally unique guitar sound of queen) wrote 'Brian May songs'?
10. Love of My Life (Rock In Rio): One of Freddie's most beautiful and heartfelt compositions that was released unsuccessfully as a 'live' single in 1977; this Rock In Rio version comes so much later (1985) and interestingly has a patch of the 330,000 live audience singing 'Brian! Brian! Brian!' whie he does a short, soft guitar solo between the crowd singling the first verses and Freddie taking over. There are many great live-versions of this number where the crowd sing-along so it does feel hugely indulgent (or pretty needy) that Brian May would bypass them all for one where the crowd are shouting for him over a Freddie composition..
11. We Will Rock You (Movie Mix): Now this is a proper 'Brian May Queen' Song - and one known the world-over probably raking in as much in Royalties or more than Bohemian Rhapsody. What amazes me is that it has taken more than 40 years for Queen to release a 'studio to live' version when I myself have been cutting it up like that on tapes since the early eighties! Notwithstanding that it's great to finally hear this done properly - it amazes me that Queen haven't released the brilliant Queen & John Farnham version that exists and rightly goes on for rather more than the oroginal 2 mins 50 seconds. What also amazes me is that this song doesn't open the album or slide in between Hammer To Fall (Track 19) and We Are The Champions (Track 20) where it rightfully belongs..
15. Who Wants To Live Forever (Brian May): From the 'Highlander' Soundtrack and released on 'A Kind Of Magic' this is a beautiful Queen track that Brian could justifiably have.. revisited - not that it needed it. However it's notable that the track was a minor hit whereas Roger Taylor's 'A Kind Of Magic' was number one in 40 countries.. Hmmm.. I don't see that track on here..
16-19: Live Aid: Fantastic to hear the Bohemian Rhapsody / Radio Ga-Ga medley that blew-away Live Aid here and on this album containing the abridged version of Radio Ga-Ga (3 mins vice 6) written by Roger taylor and Number One in 19 countries. Also good to see a live version of We Are The Champions though I remain stumped as to why 'Hammer To Fall' appears except that it's a Brian May number. Personally I would have removed it and added in somewhere else perhaps 'Flash' which was a proper 'May-Queen' song that everyone would recognise instantly.
21.Don't Stop Me Now.. revisited: Brian May has already introduced us to the 'long-lost-guitars' version of Don't Stop me Now on the 2nd disc of the 'Deluxe' version of Jazz - which like all of the Bob Clearmountain reworked releases was already overly heavy on guitars. That makes me slightly annoyed; this desperate need for Brian May to force guitars into places where they don't need to be. Yes Queen are bombastic and heavily produced in the studio - but sometimes less-is-more. By the way - I play guitar!!! Notwithstanding all of this - I can't help but like this 'rocked-up' version of what I believe remains the No1 Queen download and firm favourite for everyone. Thank you for admitting it's been ..revisited!
22. The Show Must Go On: I can only presume this is from the end-titles. What I do find a little disappointing is that 'One Vision' (provoked by Live Aid and released shortly after); 'Was It All Worth It?' - a rip-roaring stomping orchestral roak closer to The Miracle; 'Scandal' - a very 'Queen' single release from The Miracle which tears into the sickening tabloid press; the Led Zeppelin inspired 'Innuendo' or distinctly Roger Taylor 'These Were The Days Of Our Lives' No1 singles didn't make the cut. Or indeed the stunning epilogue 'Mother Love' from 'Made In Heaven.' Let's face it - just as we aren't going to see 'We Will Rock You 2' The Musical - we aren't likely to see a follow-up to the Bohemian Rhapsody movie..
I've ommitted specific commentary on the remaining tracks on this album NOT because they are unworthy; the opposite - they're most worthy and have been remixed to bring forward the Drums and Bass to where they rightfully belong. I have little doubt that Freddie would absolutely agree.
All in all - Bohemian Rhapsody is a much flawed gem of a chronology that doesn't seem to quite know if it's a 'best of' collection, a 'chronological collection' or a 'Brian May wish-list' which begrudgingly admits Freddie Mercury was actually a damn good song-writer and fails to recognise Roger Taylor's contribution. A much flawed gems-tone in Queen's very heavy Crown which seems to have removed some of the real gems and replaced them with a mixture of 'paste' and cubic-zirconiums..
